Rodriguez.

As a director capable of brilliant films, but most films from his hand still hang around mediocrity. There aren't often seriously bad movies unless Rodriguez is looking towards children's movies, because when it comes to adult movies, he manages to hold his own, in a limited way.

Especially because Rodriguez knows very well what entertainment is and regularly knows how to work it out to the max. Desperado is somewhere in between, because it has some really genius sequences, but also some bad choices. It could easily have been an above-average film, but the bad choices are sometimes made by Rodriguez here unfortunately.

The bad choice in this case was to include Hayek's character so prominently in the film. Not only can she not act at all, but her serious and dramatic character sucks all the fun out of the movie that it had before. Not that Banderas has a really great part to play, but he was at least a lot more enjoyable than what Hayek does here.

Furthermore, the camera work during the action scenes is a bit disappointing and the film mainly benefits from the fact that it is all handled nicely and over the top. The finale is already a nice scene, but in general the action goes on to a large extent and for a nice long time. Very rude, very wrong. A lot is shot to shreds and the fact that the film does this in a self-conscious way only makes things more fun.

It's a film that only drags a bit after a while and goes on for a little too long. I miss some rudeness in terms of blood and sound, and also good acting. The action is what makes the film complete, and the film knows how to take advantage of that. Desperado is sometimes memorable, but in general also empty and a film that can only hide behind the entertainment. Entertaining for once.

After Machete, it was again Rodriguez's turn last Wednesday. This time Desperado, and he had really faded into the background of memory and surprised me in a positive way.

Something that immediately stands out, the time Buscemi is given in the beginning to tell his story. Quite a difference with Machete, which is only about blunt violence, so Desperado gets a little more time and peace to develop and have a nice ending. Also, the familiar faces stand out. Danny Trejo, Quentin Tarantino, Cheech Marin, Steve Buscemi and the breathtaking Salma Hayek, wow what a woman she is.

It is Banderas who steals the show as a reckless and sometimes clumsy hitman with a heart of gold. A role that Banderas is fine with. This, supplemented with the great atmosphere, really nice music, nice action in different scenes and at times coarse and crazy humor makes Desperado a nice film. Add to that the costing sound of the beer tap and you don't have Robert Rodriguez's best, certainly not, but a distinctive product and tasty product from the best man. Yes, just fine.
