Excellent film in which a boy finds out in a confrontational way what his father does for a living. A quietly constructed gangster drama skilfully directed by Sam Mendes in which a few father-son relationships take center stage. Beautiful music by Thomas Newman, beautifully decorated and beautifully portrayed. Excellent acting from the entire cast.

Half Mendes.

As a director, he is definitely a decent person to handle a film like this with. It is therefore not necessarily the direction that leaves the film in the cold, but especially the story. Road to Perdition is a childish film topped with an adult sauce. That just doesn't work well in this environment.

You're looking on one hand at a pretty cool, dark movie that's pretty quirky, but on the other hand at a kind of Disney movie with some blood and gunshots. How ironic that I got to see this movie on Disney+. Still, despite these criticisms, the film was well on its way during the first hour, but lost me in the second half.

The acting is nice, but not brilliant. Hanks just doesn't get enough space to show his character. It's nice for what we get to see, but I didn't sense much progress between him and his son. Because of this, their story actually left me cold, but the other characters also get some short dialogues, actions and scenes without really seeming to get closer.

Beautiful, well-directed images here and there. What I really liked is the cinematography. Nice filters, nice focus and, above all, an ideal play with the lighting. The period in which the film takes place is certainly very close and that is thanks to the complete and detailed directing by Mendes. He is certainly a craftsman and it shows in this film, but otherwise this story could not convince me.

It was a film that was supposed to appeal to an emotional part of me, but it didn't work. I also found the second half quite distant and when we have to feel something, it doesn't happen. There is something very beautiful hidden under the structure of the film, which pops out a few times in the first half. Beautiful cinematography, excellent atmosphere, but Road to Perdition doesn't go much further than that for me.
