Carpenter aiming for a large audience with a cool Mustang and some romance on the road and on the road. I can often do something with such a trip through small town America, beautiful pictures, a specific atmosphere and all that, it does have that, but it doesn't go that smoothly. A few clumsy effects won't hurt. The two quickly find each other and although a search is underway, it is mainly up to Bridges and Allen to take on the film.

The fact that the alien still has to learn a few things is probably meant to be touching and funny, but it's too close to silly for me. That with the deer is still nice, but as soon as Jenny reveals that she can't get pregnant, you know what time it is. Narrative also not too goochem, it is much too close together. It sinks a little further around the government and a mandatory lesson. All in all, not enough charm to go along with it.

One of the most forgotten yet good films of the 80s, a mix of Sci Fi and romance.

Although John Carpenter was best known for innovative films such as the Halloween franchise, The Thing and The Fog, this Starman was also quite good. Perhaps this film fell somewhat in the shadow of the similar and more 'blockbust' Terminator from the same year 1984.

Shame that Carpenter stuck with his early 80s movies. After that he didn't make any big movies, unlike for example a Ridley Scott who also became big in the late 70s / early 80s with Alien and Blade Runner for example. The recent Purge films also reminded me a bit of Carpenter, although these films are worse directed with weaker screenplays.

I saw Starman a few times on TV during that annual Veronica May month in the 90's. Always sat down for it.

Good film that entertains and moves.

The film is supported by good acting by the excellently cast Bridges and Allen (not to mention the fine supporting role of Charles Martin Smith) but too much lacks the signature of other Carpenter films and feels too much like a mainstream adult version of ET It starts off very strong when the Starman is still a bit creepy (and his transformation is pretty well done). But after that, in the first half, the same half-comedic trick is repeated too often: Starman knows nothing and everything has to be explained, except for the oldest movement, which works fine right away. Also, the movie is way too slow. But that they forgive because of beautiful shots and the right dose of human warmth. It remains unclear why the government remains so inhospitable to visitors from far away, but we'll just stick to the power of the military industrial complex or something. At the end we are treated with beautiful effects.

And it's also nice that at the end after the credits we are assured that only the Voyager archive images were real and that the rest of this story was really made up. LOL!
