Ugh.

I've seen this movie before, but then I really hated it. Before I'd ever seen a Japanese Gojira movie, by the way, but this disaster vehicle is just dramatic, even when compared to the original movie.

Emmerich turns it into a lame American disaster film, but even worse. Partly because of Broderick, terrible character who absolutely does not fit with this movie. Anyway, most of the characters are terrible caricatures, even Jean Reno can't stand himself in this movie.

At first it seems acceptable. CG is now quite outdated, but Godzilla can still destroy quite a bit. Although the camera mainly focuses on the ground, where Gojira usually destroys entire apartment buildings. But that's just for the introduction, then the story shifts to a nest and a team of French yo-yos + Broderick trying to kill Godzilla's offspring.

In fact, the second part has become an ordinary Jurrasic Park clone, with worse effects, lightness at the wrong times and in the wrong ways. The worst part is that Godzilla and offspring are absolutely not dangerous, where that was clearly the intention.

No, the first half hour is not that bad, but after that it also gets bad that the next two hours are a complete disaster that is barely noticeable. It is understandable that they have put the lid back on the pot in Japan after this film. The more recent American attempt isn't great either, but a step in the right direction compared to this one.

0.5*

Truly unbelievable how many vinegar pissers tear down this extremely entertaining video. No, you get no Shakespearean dialogue, no reflections on the human condition, and no deeper symbolism. This is simply a disaster film with a good dash of successful humor, based on a classic without pretensions. There is a lot of destruction and in the meantime there is still some room for the personal lives of the main characters, which is well used in between all the violence. In addition, many fun jokes in a great scenario. Broderick, another real nerd here, is always fun.

The special effects are mixed: here and there the CGI is not very convincing (not so well developed at the time) and you can clearly see that a blue/green screen has been used. The many rain showers add some atmosphere and on the whole the film looks fine.

Nice touches: Attempting to take out Godzilla destroys more than the beast itself. The incompetent, flabby mayor Ebert is a clear middle finger to the sour film critics Gene SIskel (note: the assistant is also called Gene!) and Roger Ebert (their well-known verdict: two thumbs down) who have slammed all of Emmerich's films. Furthermore, Desperate Housewives' Doug Savant, a soldier here, was not known at all.

All in all, a very enjoyable film by Emmerich, who therefore raises both middle fingers for a while to anyone who expects too much from this kind of popcorn movies.

Revisited today!

Still a spectacular film full of action and sensation.

Especially the 2nd part reminded me of Jurassic park when they are in some kind of kitchen.

Then you think it's over and then there's a whole lot with action and chases.

All in all very spectacular, not to mention this part is the best in the series, after this it only gets less with dark scenes, this part just not!

The animal is also well made.

All in all quite a spectacle and I always watch this film again every 2 or 3 years!
