Ben Crane (Kurt Russell) was once a successful racehorse breeder. But now that his stable is empty, he works as a horse trainer for the unsympathetic Palmer. Yet his daughter Cale is crazy about her father and the horses. She begs him daily to go to the racetrack. But on the day she is finally allowed to join, she sees the young horse Soñador fall and break her leg. Ben is fired and the horse is unceremoniously written off by Palmer. But Ben can't bring himself to kill the animal and he decides to take her home. There, however, the discarded horse seems to be just as unlucky as Ben. Cale doesn't see it as gloomy as her father and does everything to give Soñador a second chance.

I thought this was a really nice movie. The bond between the girl and the horse, as well as the bond between father and daughter, is touching. Dakota Fanning really delivers one of her best acting performances here.

Dakota Fanning, the child girl who in the meantime also confirmed as a teenager, is the pivot of this family film, which in the title refers to a true story, yet comes across as very sentimental. Americans just love to portray children as super-intellectual and adult-resistant.
Film, however, remains cinematically well constructed and can also count on the decent acts of Russell and Kristofferson.
