Wonderful feel-good movie in the form of a sports film with the usual training and competition scenes. The pivotal point of the film is the student/teacher relationship between Laurence Fishburne and the as yet unknown Keke Palmer, and it is well written and acted. Not exactly innovative but certainly entertaining and well executed. Maybe a little too thick Hollywood sauce, but that shouldn't spoil the fun.

While other youngsters engage in consuming lysergic acid diethylamide or snuggle up on Przewalski horses, Akeelah is being trained for a spelling contest. These spelling bees are a household name in the US In 1995 the decisive word was xanthosis. The level for that age is exceptional. The pressure that these children face can be on the verge of being irresponsible. A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969) covered the same topic. They rightly emphasize that learning to spell is not only a matter of glossary blocks, but also of understanding the etymology.

It's amazing how good some child actors are. Twelve-year-old Keke Palmer shows spontaneity, aplomb and natural talent. Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett are reunited. In addition to a competition, it is also about human relations. Tried and tested means are used to make it compelling and moving. It functions. Highly recommended for the youth, but also enjoyable for adults.
