Very nicely done, nice design. Once you see the 'real' Finney as a young man, you realize that the old version is very credible. And the only time you notice that you are watching a film from 1970 is during the special hell scene. By the way, I actually didn't know it was a musical, but that part is also fine.

Humbug!

On New Year's Eve I continued with the Christmas film list and that became this Scrooge with the eye-catcher the name of Albert Finney, I knew little else about it. The story is all too well known and I can remember a Muppet version and I think I also remember Bill Murray in one other version, but that's beside the point.

The story is clear, as I said, about the grumpy Mr. Scrooge who has little time for Christmas and all the good of the people around this holiday. For Scrooge only one thing counts, his money chest and what is still outstanding in terms of loans that are reclaimed under real threats and strangulation contracts and Finney does that with all the panache and complaining that fits the role well. In addition, the film stands out as well made with the ghosts, the setting and the atmosphere. A downside for me is the much singing and the dancing people since I really hate musicals, something I did not know about the film since those other films also do not have musical elements as far as I know.

Well, not that this is a huge debacle because I still wanted to see the film and besides the musical there are still plenty of other things to enjoy. As already said the atmosphere, the contrast between all the poverty and happiness versus the grumpy and rich Scrooge, but above all the story of Scrooge himself who sees the light through the second and third ghost and sees the cause of his own bitterness and then goes completely crazy which of course is pure feel good. Nevertheless it is a reminder how most people take life in today's society for granted and can only complain while we live in luxury and have it good enough.

Anyway, it should be clear that there is little to complain about apart from the musical elements, so in my opinion the film scores an excellent grade of 3.5.
