Nice film about a gruff, old miser who is visited on Christmas Eve by a couple of ghosts. The well-known and many times filmed Christmas story by Charles Dickens. A fine decoration, and George C. Scott is perfectly cast and certainly does not disappoint in the lead role. It's still a nice story, but maybe it's been seen too often.

Perhaps the best film adaptation of A Christmas Carol, along with the 1951 version. The film looks a bit cheap and doesn't have the best special effects, but the acting is very good. George C. Scott puts down a very human Scrooge. What a star actor he was, he sadly passed away in 1999.

"Why show me this, if I'm past all hope?"

A Christmas Carol is a British/American TV movie, based on the world famous book by Charles Dickens. The film is directed by British director Clive Donner, who started his career as editor of the 1951 film Scrooge. This TV movie was shot on location in Shrewsbury, England. In the same place, Charles Dickens once gave a personal reading of his famous Christmas story.

Despite being made for TV, this version looks fine by TV standards. The sets are often clearly miniatures, but thanks to Tony Imi's camera work, it all looks beautiful and the film exudes a real Christmas atmosphere. A Christmas Carol was originally a ghost story that happened to take place during Christmas. This TV movie is one of the few versions that also gives the story a macabre touch. The film is mainly supported by the often bombastic music by Nick Bicât, which would not have looked out of place in an average horror film.

The acting is very good across the board, and George C. Scott portrays one of the best versions of Ebenezer Scrooge. As it should be, he portrays Scrooge as a real jerk of a guy, whom you can build little sympathy for as a viewer. During the film you see how he was formed as a person and why he finally sees the light again and changes into a generous and friendly man. This is also excellently portrayed by Scott. One of the most faithful versions of the Charles Dickens story.
