The master shows himself in the limitation. Oren Peli managed to keep the cost very low by using his own house as a set and by working with a small number of unknown actors. The result looks like a home video. There was no elaborate script. The actors, who bear the same first name as their character, were allowed to improvise based on the main lines. Katie Featherston in particular comes across as natural. It doesn't always have to be a bone-thin fashion model. Afterwards, a selection was made from the image material. Sometimes the camera is operated by an actor, sometimes it is stationary. The viewer feels like a fly on the wall. It comes across quite realistic and it works better than the usual expensive effects and bombastic music.

The demon's motivation is not very clear at first. Does he like to scare people? Apparently he used to possess the body of a certain Diane and is now stalking Katie. It is interesting to hit the pause button to read the article about Diane. She bled to death after amputating her own arm during an escape attempt.

In the original ending , Katie used a knife to kill Micah and herself. That same knife could already be seen in the opening scene in the kitchen. In the reworked ending, Katie survives and disappears. This was an idea of Steven Spielberg who may have wanted to leave open the possibility for a sequel. Those sequels mean less to me, but this first part is one of the most original horror works of this century.

Less scary than I remembered, but still pretty creepy. For a low budget film like this this has become a very well-known film series. It's also just really terrifying to have a demon or ghost in your house all the time. Something you can't see is always terrifying if you don't know about it. It's that ignorance that scares you. Kind of like with covid that has now clearly become more of a reign of terror than anything else, but well that has nothing to do with the film. The funny thing is that even though Katie is possessed, things still happen around her without her doing anything. Sure Ouija board, Katie wasn't even home. It really is a movie you should only watch in the dark. I slept well, but I can imagine that not everyone crawls into bed so confidently.
