“Sometimes the world of the living gets mixed up with the world of the dead.”

The Others is a chilling and atmospheric film. The tension is palpable from the start and the old and large house provides a gloomy setting. Director Amenábar doesn't need much to create the right atmosphere and the story is well put together.

You feel that something is not right, but what remains unclear for a long time. The twist was very strong and is performed phenomenally. I'm starting to appreciate Kidman more and more and here too she was insanely good. The kids are creepy and the same goes for that old lady (the wonderful Flanagan). There are a number of strong scares in it, but the film mainly has to rely on the gloomy atmosphere and this is where the film excels.

This movie was somewhere halfway through when I suddenly had an accident. The 5.1 sound was so well adjusted in the living room that I thought for a moment that a door really slammed shut in our (these days only occupied by me) house. It is characteristic of the amazing sound design that the Others help to shape. In any case, I find it very respectable that director Alejandro Amenábar composed the score for this film himself. There is no recognizable theme, but the (horror) atmosphere that the music conveys comes into its own in the empty mansion that houses this metaphysical plot.

The Others is a pleasant atmospheric piece, captured in a strong scenario. At first I thought the story was a bit limited, but in the end it turns out that the sparse information you get only benefits from a clever twist. So strong suspense. The fact that the film manages to captivate the entire running time is mainly due to the excellent acting. Nicole Kidman excels again (I recently saw her shine in Dogville (2003)) and puts one of the strongest rolls I saw of her. The kids are perfectly cast, especially the young girl. Fionulla Flanagan fills in an important supporting role with verve.

I couldn't help but think of The Sixth Sense (1999) afterwards, but I prefer to see The Others as a standalone standing sublime atmospheric horror, which excels in its (sub) genre.

4*

The film is based on the well-known horror clichés of the haunted house and contact with the dead (as in séances) but it stands head and shoulders above the average horror film because it refrains from major effects but is subdued , subtly and atmospherically builds up to the solution of the mystery of what is going on and what happened behind it. The tension is that of a psychological thriller – the film gets under your skin – and the horror story is intelligent, making it a delightful, classic horror film.
