Somehow I want to hate this movie. I detest more or less all M. Night Shyamalan films and I wouldn't mind at all if this film, which I once thought was very good, rounds out the list. I will sacrifice a childhood love for that. I can still remember (I was in high school) when The Sixth Sence was considered one of the scariest movies ever. It was actually quite an experience to watch a DVD in the year 2000 at all.

Come on, there are some good scares in there, but really scary… meh. Many years later you notice that it is just a bit more about character development and that the story is quite well put together. So you read it right. I really like the story. This is really very different from the shit that Shyamalan will write later. You notice that the actors also feel a lot better when they are not spouting nonsense half the time. There are some questionable moments, but they stand out more, because they were even worse on Signs and Lady In The Water. No, this is a very fresh film that is nicely ninetees in a pleasant way.

It is a pleasant drama film with good acting. Haley Joel Osment steals the show. The piss pole he plays combined with his ability to see dead people is very strong. The horror element tops it off and puts you on the edge of your seat. The Sixth Sense still can't do anything wrong after sixteen years.

“I see dead people.”

Rock solid movie. Still. I used to think this was the scariest film there was, but now I especially enjoy the gloomy atmosphere, the direction by Shyamalan, the inventive script, the beautiful images and the acting performances of Willis and the young Osment in particular.

Now that I'm a bit older I can appreciate the emotional impact of the last part more. Yes, there is a twist to the story, but The Sixth Sense is much more than that and is also about grief and coping with loss/trauma. And how much we would like to do certain things over, but don't get the chance. dr. Malcolm Crowe (Willis) finds out in a very special way and manages to process a trauma from the past through the young Cole (Osment). With a twist.

I expected that the fun would be gone if you already know the twist, but after 3 times it still remains a very captivating film! The Sixth Sense is a compelling story about a boy who is afflicted and his psychiatrist, the story builds up nicely, and the acting of Willis and Osment is very convincing. The genius twist (one of the most famous on the silver screen) at the end is not even the best thing about the film. 4.5!
