Earthlings plot

"Make The Connection"

Earthlings is a documentary about animal husbandry and man's reliance on animals for food, clothing, entertainment and for animal experiments. In an extensive study of pet stores, puppy mills and shelters, factory farming, the leather and fur trade, sports and entertainment industries, and ultimately medical and science, Earthlings uses hidden cameras and never-before-seen footage to portray the day-to-day running of some of the world's largest industries that use animals for profit. This journey through various expressions of the relationship between humans and animals raises questions about subjects such as animal rights, factory farming and vivisection, without directly answering or forcing an opinion on the viewer.

Just watched the film, as a human being and biologist I am obliged to. I did not get tears in my eyes to my surprise as I can get emotional quite quickly. The problem for me with this film was -as mentioned before- the scaremongering.

I am aware that an awful lot of animals are 'used' for food, clothing etc. I also understand that this causes quite a bit of inconvenience. But, what is not told is that this is a lot less than it used to be. Think for example of Artis with all its too small cages in the 1920s, that has improved enormously now. There are enough zoos that make an important contribution to the preservation of animal species. Circuses without animals (cirque du Soleil) for example are nowadays (in Western Europe at least) more popular than with animals. In the Netherlands, far fewer laboratory animals are used than 20-30 years ago. There are also strict guidelines for the actions.

Of course, things go wrong and can be better. I also do not ask to only show happy images. I am in favor of showing abuses. But, and this is where the program makers themselves make a mistake, show images that are at least from this century. What is the point of showing sickening abuses from 1989 in the case of those pigs. Those monkeys (macaques) as test animals are very likely from research from the 70s! In any case, be up to date, that should not be difficult if the problem is -still- so big.

Apart from that, I found the images of Auschwitz in this context tasteless (not even a pun intended). They are only swallowed by the viewer because we are confronted with a shameless amount of horrible images in a fairly random order.

Hence my 2*. After this tirade you may think, why another 2*? Well, that's because I thought it was good to pause for a moment to consider my food, clothing etc. with the question of where everything comes from.

Hard documentary that is at its best during the 5 subjects. The pre- and post-talk are not really my thing. Pedant came to mind, rightly or wrongly. If that is not it, then it is somewhat silky. The images, they are not. Anything but. Horrible what is passing by here. I am not very naive when it comes to how we treat animals and have seen some of this kind of misery before, but it still hurts.

That doesn't change the fact that I have my reservations about it. No idea how Monson got this footage, but it comes across as a bit of a random selection from all sorts of things, different years and various sources that were then horribly selected. I have nothing against this kind of raw and uncut footage, if it's done like this, you have to show it like this, no matter how bad, but this way it becomes a bit of a mess.

Then I would rather have something that focuses on a certain wrongdoing and exposes it. Preferably with a rebuttal, because that is of course missing. That was also not in it, knowing that the maker, speaker, musician and producer are all outspoken vegans. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but you can feel it in the documentary. Unreliable is perhaps not quite the right word, but that is also one that came to mind. Just like bad and angry.

The best and most shocking documentary I have ever seen. I literally cried several times. I felt a huge mix of sadness and anger. Everyone should really see this. I am sure that by far most people would immediately become vegetarian or vegan. Before seeing this documentary I was already a vegetarian and part-time vegan. Now I have become 100% vegan. I am very happy that I saw this documentary. I will never forget these images.
