The Hitcher plot

"Never pick up strangers."

Grace and Jim (a college couple in love) go on vacation to New Mexico. When they are driving through the desert in the rain, suddenly a man is standing in the middle of the road and they almost run over. When the stranger - who apparently has car trouble - approaches the car, they give in to their fear and drive off. When they fill up with petrol, it turns out that the man has been given a lift by a truck driver. Then the man asks Jim if he can get a lift, Jim agrees, Grace doesn't like it. When the three of them are eventually in the car, they quickly discover the real intentions of the hitchhiker...

Not bad, but not great either. You've probably all heard that you should never take strangers in your car. Perhaps that wisdom stems from the original version of this 1986 remake. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure I'll pass. Now I usually watch little horror in the summer period because it is always light (unless it is so hot that the shutters all go down anyway). So this one came up last night together with The Faculty. I thought the film was shot quite nicely and it's also a very short film so it never gets boring. Sean Bean knows how to put down a bad guy and does it again with gusto. Sophia Bush is a beautiful girl who grows balls during the movie. Her boyfriend may not be the greatest actor, but he also delivers his role well. I was even sad how he died. So nice to see it once.

Not bad but certainly not as good as the 1986 original. It was supposed to have more of a suspense, while this version uses quite a bit of false jump scares and a few gory kills. And while in the original version Jim is on the track on his own, in this version the girlfriend has to come along because... girl power, right? Sophia Bush may be seen, but otherwise has little added value. On the contrary, she helps the killer with her clumsiness. And with conversations like "You ever think about having kids?" most men are immediately in a thriller/horror situation . It doesn't take a homicidal hitchhiking maniac! Nice muscle cars by the way, those 1970 Oldsmobile 442 and 1981 Pontiac Firebird trans am.

After the cult classic a few weeks ago, it was time to get the remake, even though I didn't have high hopes for it.

It is not a strict copy in that sense because with the couple on their way for spring break, the plot is already more adapted to the current time. By the way, Jim has a nice car with the Oldsmobile 442, and so his girlfriend can also be there in the form of Sophia Bush. That's already two notches ahead of the '87 version. And so the environment may also be with the beautiful color filters regarding desert and sky.

But the best is soon said. Bean is a weak reflection of what Rutger Hauer brings in the '87 version. The opening with the rabbit looks painfully bad, not to mention the misfortune that Jim and Grace have when they run off the road. The result is a considerable blow, but despite not wearing seat belts, they get out without any problems. I wonder who writes and invents such a thing. Why does it have to end with a spectacular crash and not a jam in a ditch or something, something more realistic. But the biggest flaw of the film is all the unnecessary dialogue, and there are a few in that regard that do not rise above the level of Sesame Street. And that too much dialogue is really killing for the film, if only because the original without the frills is moving very well. '87 is just so much more powerful because it is simple and kept, and mainly revolves around the dark atmosphere, something that is also missing from this remake.

Quite possibly The Hitcher would have had some chance of success had it not been a remake of a film that is in no way matched by this product. But otherwise this is a film that will soon be forgotten.
