Title holder within sci-fi horror.

Insane, in fact, how 40 (!) years later this film still stands proudly. Of course aging strikes here and there, but thanks to strong acting, impressive sets and practical effects and a handful of classic scenes, it still manages to create a spotlessly horrifying atmosphere.

Credible science-fiction staging, which starts its claustrophobic effect from the calm introduction of the ship and its inhabitants and lets it slowly heat up until the ship starts to take on the function of a pressure cooker.

The isolation, the importance of protocol, the risks of contamination, but also the fascination with extraterrestrial life and the cabin-feverish atmosphere are all perfect steps for the horror in space. Due to many imitations, now cinematographically commonplace perhaps; it is difficult to estimate how overwhelming these effects must have been at the time.

Shining roles for Hurt, Holm, Skerrit and, of course, Weaver, who infuses her character Ripley with the skepticism, decisiveness and balls to make her a memorable, highly iconic heroine.

Progressive in a broad sense, still effective creepiness and despite many modern epigones still dominating within the subgenre. 4.5*

Seen this film a number of times, but now consciously my opinion for Moviemeter.

It remains a gem of a film. Even in this time still good to show. Except for some old computers.

After this, all kinds of alien-like movies were made. Sometimes very good, often very bad.

Sigourney remains one of my favorite actresses. I like 'power' women. Here she is already starting to bite. Wonderful person.

The alien doesn't even come into the picture very often, but just like with Jaws, it's about the atmosphere as a whole and it's super effective. Simply an all-time classic.

A masterclass in suspense. Like 'Alien' (1979) plays with the claustrophobia of a space station through the excellent set designs and an immersive eye for detail. Thinking back to the film, I again feel the sense of being trapped in that unbearable heat. Always the wet T-shirts and sweat beading on foreheads, as the presence of an alien invader becomes more palpable. Here HR Giger's surreal designs (almost phallic in a Freudian way) are not yet a well-worn cliché and really feel like an eerie confrontation with the unknown. Also striking how 'Alien' (1979) is way ahead of her time with a female protagonist who had to fight for her own place in a male stronghold. Or how Ripley's battle against the alien becomes more meaningful as she's had to overcome so much to get to where she is now. It makes her a strong and psychologically layered character.
