The first Alien directed by Sir Ridley Scott, was released in 1979. It was a claustrophobic horror set in space, with hero Ellen Ripley and her crewmates terrorised by a being that would eventually be known as a Xenomorph.

The original trilogy continued with Aliens, directed by James Cameron, who added more of an action element to the story, while David Fincher's Alien 3 was set on a remote prison planet.

Sigourney Weaver, who played Ripley, would return for Alien: Resurrection in 1997.

Over a decade later, Ridley Scott would return to direct the prequel movie set in the Alien universe, Prometheus, and that was followed by Alien: Covenant. Neill Blomkamp was heavily involved in the development of a new movie, but his pitch was ditched in favour of a vision from Fede Alvarez.

What is the plot of Alien: Romulus?

A vague premise exists which reads:

'The story follows a group of young people on a distant world who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.'

When does Alien: Romulus take place?

Spaeny previously revealed that Romulus takes place between the events of Alien and Aliens.

"It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie," she told Variety.

"They brought the same team from Aliens, the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible."

Fans have now speculated that Romulus could act as a prequel to Aliens and might feature Hadley's Hope research colony.

“Even if he was gonna say, ‘You destroyed my legacy,’ I wanted to be in front of him and see him in the eye. I didn’t want to get an email where it says, ‘Ridley says…’”

Scott apparently walked into the room and said: “‘Fede, what can I say? It’s fucking great.’”
