A nice film that was received with mixed feelings.

Ticket sales were not exactly high, and Vangelis managed to prevent worse.

The film was released in 1992, exactly 500 years after the discovery of America.

Screenwriter Rose Bosch came up with the idea for this project, and found the right director in Ridley Scott.

It was Scott's wish to make a film about Columbus all along, and only agreed if Gérard Depardieu would play the lead.

In addition, his eye fell on Sigourney Weaver for the role of Queen Isabella, but this was not certain at the beginning.

Weaver was doing reshoots for Alien³ (1992) , and they were delayed a bit.

Anjelica Huston was therefore considered to take her place.

Fortunately, Weaver was available at the last minute.

Ridley Scott was not the first choice, because Francis Ford Coppola, Roland Joffé and Oliver Stone were approached for directing.

The rest of the cast was well selected.

In addition to Gérard Depardieu, Armand Assante and Michael Wincott deliver a strong piece of acting.

The role of Michael Wincott is especially suited to him, and he did this again in 1994 with The Crow (1994)

The soundtrack of Vangelis undoubtedly owes a lot to this film.

The album was in the Album Top 100 for some time in 1992.

The song "Conquest of Paradise " stayed at number 1 for about 19 weeks in 1995.

All in all a good enough.

This film was created exactly 500 years later. Always thought 1492 would be a really boring movie, but it certainly isn't. There is plenty to experience and see, especially on land. Music is pleasant and perhaps more famous than the film itself. I don't know what's right about it. I myself have been to Santo Domingo where his bed is still standing! But the film is certainly to be welcomed and is probably partly based on truth. Only his course was really Asia. From Spain that is a crazy speed. Totally illogical. Well, that's what was said in the books. I thought the roles were pretty well played and the images are beautifully shot on blu-ray. The English subtitles are a bit difficult with this language. Especially ship terms are difficult to follow, but it was a nice viewing In the New World. And I'll be checking out that title and movie soon!

Depardieu who plays a decent role.

Then it's on my tongue to say that that must have been a long time ago. But on the other hand, I've hardly seen anything of what he's accomplished in the past ten years or so, and then of course you can easily think that it was so bad that it is not played anywhere... maybe he deserves the benefit of the doubt. After all, he's played some truly iconic roles.

Not that this one belongs there, by the way. Ridley Scott makes too much of a messy fairy tale for that. A fairytale about a Columbus that is too idealized and put into current standards and values, which does not seem credible to me for a moment.

Furthermore (and that was actually the reason to look up this film) Sigourney Weaver in what is actually a somewhat disappointing small role. So that was a bit disappointing as well.

Well, the images are fine and the soundtrack is quite nice, it is not a punishment to see this film. But not nearly as convincing as I had hoped and expected.
