Frida plot

"Prepare to be seduced."

The eventful life of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Disabled in a bus accident at a young age, she channeled her physical pain and the emotional frustration of her tempestuous marriage to famed muralist Diego Rivera in a masterful body of colorful and provocative canvases. She also experienced very intensely the political, artistic and sexual revolutions of her time. Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera became the most acclaimed artists in Mexican history.

A biopic by the book. In any case, Salma Hayek acts very well. Something that unfortunately didn't show up in her last films. And of course Alfred Molina, an underestimated actor who does not always take the lead, but does play those beautiful roles. The film follows Frida's life and wants to reflect the events of her life as much as possible. That makes it an interesting biopic to get to know her life as a painter. The intermezzos with animated things from her work seem too forced. This could have been better. In addition, I miss the element of pain that is so important to her. Now everything revolved around her relationship with Diego Rivera and the extramarital affairs on both sides. And the painter Frida therefore came in second place.

Nice movie. I had seen it a few years ago and recently came across it at the thrift store. For the price I couldn't pass it up and in my memory it was a very good film. I really like Frida Kahlo's art, I like her signature style, and her life story appeals to me. It is sad what she has gone through, so much bad luck and pain, but I find her painting talent admirable and I find her an interesting person. I think Salma Hayek plays her well, I like the colorful and artistic effect, which fits well with Frida and her story, and despite the long running time, I find the film easy to watch. I don't always find it interesting and sometimes a bit too played, but I think the whole is more than enough. 4.5*

Luckily they took a Mexican to play Frida Kahlo. Salma Hayek had the fire to revive this fury. Her paintings contain symbolism and bright colors. They are linked to events in her life and processed with animation. Themes were her physical suffering and the alienation from herself and her environment. Frida and Diego were very different in appearance and age, but in character they had a lot in common. They argued a lot, but in the end they depended on each other.

Although they speak English instead of Spanish, the Mexican atmosphere is quite evoked. The spicy mole, the ascent of the Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacán and the music of some Mariachi trios, Lila Downs and the elderly Chavela Vargas - who once had an affair with the real Frida Kahlo. The adventure with the Josephine Baker-esque dancer may have been fantasized. Geoffrey Rush has a nice side role as Trotsky, who represents true communism. Under the influence of her husband, Frida was Trotskyist to the core. It is a successful tribute to perhaps the greatest female painter.
