Not entirely successful as a family chronicle, because the story often jumps too far in time and therefore hardly gets around to developing the various characters.

Strong role from Vittorio Gassman, but that's not really a surprise because he's always good.

Certainly not Ettore Scola's best film.

I agree with the comments here. The film itself focuses entirely on Carlo (and his family), but I still felt it lacked real depth, which meant it didn't quite measure up to his best work. Don't get me wrong, it's very entertaining. Scola is a great director. That scene where Carlo steals money, his father is furious, and then bursts out laughing when he leaves the room is a real success. It's one of those memories that stays with you as a child, so it's logical that it's included in the film (it could have been called Amarcord). It speaks to Carlo's upbringing (which shaped him), and it's a fun scene. And there are many more enjoyable and successful moments. The camera panning through the hallways. That aunt's suicidal tendencies, where the other aunts are quite willing to help. And quite a few more scenes I can't think of right now. It reminded me a bit of Radio Days. Scola also has a sense of humor, and he beautifully blends it with drama about the repetitive nature of life.

But again, this film just lacked that bit of character development or depth that was present in, for example, Una Giornata Particolare. I can't quite put my finger on it, but how well do we really know Carlo and his family? Therefore, only 3.5 stars.

A really great film, precisely because it shows everything in the same apartment. Robert Zemeckis would take this even further with his Here, doing something similar but only in the same room from the same camera angle—a film I also enjoyed. This allows you to see the development clearly, from the family, how someone slowly becomes the center of attention and then rises above it (and slowly even outside of it—that final scene with all the family members, whose identities you, as a viewer, have no idea who they all are anymore). But also the time, through the furniture. The drama itself is less important; this is really about the individual scenes and how they create a specific impression. Moreover, the individual scenes are often captivating, and the pacing is also just right. 4.0*.
