Tof genre werk.

Qua opzet en verhaal niet zo geweldig origineel, al is het wel leuk dat er aardig wat doorheen de tijd gesprongen wordt, zodat er toch enig mysterie in verscholen zit. Maar het is vooral qua stijl dat deze film weet op te vallen. Visueel erg sterk (en wat meer dan het gebruikelijke blauw/paars neo-noir stijltje), ook de soundtrack mag er wel zijn.

Acteurs ook op niveau, beetje verrassend voor de eerste film van een beginnend regisseur, maar als je naar de producers kijkt dan merk je wel dat dit niet zomaar een klein filmpje is. Duurt verder ook niet te lang en de finale stelt niet teleur. Fijne ontdekking, maar Wen's nieuwste is toch nog een stukje beter.

Wel mijn ding, dit.

Een mix van extreme droogheid en dagdagelijks absurdisme. Het is geen populaire combo en dat zal ook wel met reden zijn, want zo toegankelijk is het niet. Er is veel repetitie, droge performances en strakke kadreringen. Maar ik heb wel meermaals luidop moeten lachen.

Het verhaaltje (een oude oorlog die vervallen is in routines) is zeker niet nieuw, maar biedt voldoende kansen om er een leuke film van te maken, en er toch ook nog een boodschapje in te frommelen. Niet zo maf als z'n eerder werk, maar Ikeda heeft z'n eigen stijltje en dat ligt me wel.
