Gaaf.

Deed wat denken aan Perfect Blue (en dus ook Black Swan), maar Jinghao weet de balans tussen drama en thriller een eigen draai te geven. Het is vooral dat de styling er een echte thriller van maakt, terwijl het plot en wat je ziet op het scherm toch meer puur drama is. Da's een redelijk eigenaardige gewaarwording, maar vond het best goed werken.

Visueel erg strak, ook de soundtrack is sterk en de acteerprestaties doen zeker niet onder. Jinghao toont zich een regisseur met veel talent en potentieel. Hoewel op het eerste zich zeker niet de meest unieke film, vond ik het toch best eigenzinnig. Benieuwd naar meer werk van deze regisseur.

't Is duidelijk dat deze film te rade is gegaan bij Shinkai, de gelijkenissen zijn dan ook talrijk. Zou deze dan ook niet te dicht tegen een andere Shinkai kijken, maar tussen twee van zijn films is het wél ideale en kwalitatieve filler. Vooral ook omdat de film z'n plaats lijkt te kunnen.

Weinig cruft, geen al te hoge ambities, gewoon zo goed mogelijk uitvoeren en vasthouden aan de kern. Mooie animatie, sfeervol, leuke mix van drama en fantasy en geen speelduur die onder de 90 minuten blijft. Meer hoeft dat niet te zijn. Best een toffe verrassing dit.
