A man gets lost in an underground passage in a subway station. In order to get out, he must find a specific exit, but the passage seems to loop endlessly. The search also seems to have a rule: if he encounters anything unusual, he must return immediately. Will he ever reach his goal and escape?

Stylish video.
The premise of this cyclical mindfuck is that our lost protagonist becomes trapped in an underground subway tunnel system. He will keep ending up at the same point until he discovers an anomaly in his surroundings. The solution seems simple: if there are no anomalies, he should continue on his way, but if there is anything at all, he should turn back. The instructions promise that he will eventually reach Exit 8, where he can exit the maze.
Be prepared for a lot of repetition (one specific sound effect in particular will reverberate for a while), but the film manages to present the story in such an empathetic way that you, the viewer, are cleverly drawn into the puzzling experience of the main character, a more than excellent role by Kazunari Ninomiya (whose voice apparently sang Kuro/Black in Tekkonkinkreet / Tekkon Kinkurîto (2006)).
A camera that patiently travels with and around our protagonist; a clinically designed setting that complements the chilling, cold sound effects; a dramatic subtext that manages to infuse the meandering path with emotion in a rather unforced manner, and a handful of surprises along the way that give the film a pleasantly unsettling feel: these are the main ingredients for a film that never really colors outside the lines, but effortlessly holds your attention and skillfully avoids boredom, something that, considering the concept and the running time (quite long for an idea like this), can be considered a considerable compliment.
The real punch is lacking, and the horror label will leave some a bit disappointed, but for fans of a small-scale yet skillfully crafted mystery, this is definitely a treat. 4*

It was quite an enjoyable film, but at times it felt a bit too repetitive. It was like the music that regularly played, Ravel's Bolero, which was also just a constant repetition.

Exit 8 is based on a video game in which the character repeatedly walks down the same subway corridor and can't find the exit. Just like in the game, the character in the film must search for clues that will lead them to the exit. You can imagine that with this in mind, the player in an interactive game would have a great time. You can also imagine that, as a passive observer, you might become bored by the repetition of moves. Exit 8 addresses this risk by constantly introducing fun, original, and surreal variations that keep the attention engaged.
Another way the film creates variety and keeps the viewer from getting bored is by creating a fun genre mix. The mystery is dominant. But elements of thriller and horror are also present. There's drama. And there are even moments that wouldn't be out of place in a comedy. It's a nice variation that creates surprising and suspenseful moments and simply works well.
Exit 8 isn't a film of frills. No character names. No exorbitant settings. No flashy special effects. No explanations. No unnecessary dramatic scenes. Only a little functional dramatic information is provided at the beginning. A touch of drama that provides the minimum empathy needed to sympathize with the lost character. It's understated. And the understatedness works. The focus is entirely on the mystery. And that mystery series is interesting enough to keep you entertained for the entire movie. I certainly had a blast with Exit 8.
