"He's always closer than you think."

For centuries and across cultures, parents have warned their children about the legendary Bagman. According to the stories, he grabs innocent children and puts them in his filthy, rotting sack, never to be seen again. Patrick McKee narrowly escaped the Bagman as a boy, which left him with lasting scars as an adult. Now Patrick's child tormentor is back and threatening the safety of his wife Karina and son Jake.

Remarkably tame horror film for a director like Colm McCarthy, who in the past specifically sought out creativity and originality. Bagman, on the other hand, is pure genre work, with of course a mysterious legend and a good-natured family who want to build their lives together on the edge of the forest. The relatively mean opening puts the viewer on edge in the first few minutes, but then the makers hit the brake pedal relatively quickly and build up calmly. In between, there are short encounters between Sam Claflin and the monster, but these scenes develop the tension in a not very effective way and the final threat does not look very intimidating. McCarthy directs his film in an atmospheric way, but cannot hide the fact that Bagman is on too safe ground and never turns out to be the nail-biter it hopes to be. Entertaining for a change, skillfully arranged at times, but otherwise not very memorable.
