Sarah and her colleague Jan Meyer are forced to investigate, and it soon becomes clear that they are hunting an intelligent and dangerous killer. Local politician Troels Hartmann is in the midst of a grueling election campaign to become Copenhagen's new mayor, when suddenly the evidence for the murder connects with him. This second season starts off well and has a more grim atmosphere than the first season. All a lot rougher.

The same goes for Lund who seems to be constantly severely depressed (so you can't do your job well but move forward) and who can't laugh. A pity in any case that there is nowhere a slightly comical note to make it appear a bit more realistic, as is the case in The Bridge (Source) for example.

It also flies back and forth very quickly after halfway; then politics, then the police, then the army and so it quickly switches between all kinds of angles with a little too much on the fork (and with a slightly disappointing ending). Yet it keeps the attention well and the atmosphere is fine for a crime series. In the end a good season but too little balanced.

3 - 3.5*

Better than season 1. The story was a bit more realistic. That does not alter the fact that there were also a number of disturbing improbabilities in it. In any case, 10 parts was a better length than the 20 parts of season 1. Unfortunately, the writer has the problem that he manages to keep the whole exciting, but that he puts down a too short and poorly developed ending. An open ending is not a problem in itself, but there are too many questions left unanswered in Season 2. On to season 3.

Forbrydelsen (“Crime”) was groundbreaking because a single crime story was spread across an entire season. The style is neo-noir with a misty atmosphere. Many scenes take place at night, in a basement, a slaughterhouse, or another dark location. Each episode lasts approximately one day and features an average of one death. It is set primarily in Copenhagen, but there are excursions to Sweden and Afghanistan.

Sarah Lund still wears knitted sweaters. Her family comes second; she is married to her work. During the investigation, she shows empathy and intuition, unlike an incompetent superior who wants to take her off the case. Because Jan Meyer did not survive the first season, she gets a new colleague, Ulrik Strange (rhymes with “tall”).

It is more than a murder mystery, as it has a political and military component. The first victim is found at a symbolic location: at a post near a war memorial, where resistance members were executed during World War II. There is a link to a military mission in Helmand, the most dangerous province in Afghanistan since 2006. Thomas Buch, the new Minister of Justice, is under pressure to approve a stricter anti-terrorism law.

The crimes are investigated from three avenues: the police, politics, and an ex-military man who escapes from a psychiatric institution to track down the murderer on his own. Raben is present in the background at just about every incident, without anyone ever noticing him. Within each camp, there are internal conflicts, secrets, and moral dilemmas. The army, above all, wants to keep lids on things.

It is a tightly constructed thriller with psychological depth, a grim atmosphere, and macabre elements. Top Danish actors are at work, notably Sofie Gråbøl and Nicolas Bro.
