In retrospect, Stanley Kubrick's body of work seems to be one long attempt to prove that he could be the best in any genre. Too bad he didn't make a western, but with 'Barry Lyndon' he did make one of the best costume dramas ever. Filmed almost entirely without electric lighting (but with a lot of candles), the images take on a painting-like quality. In particular, the 18th century works of William Hogarth are a source of inspiration. Where many directors zoom in, Kubrick ends his scenes with zoomers out, whose magnificence regularly gives rise to a sigh or a knot in the stomach. That works great when combined with the tongue-in-cheek picaresque novel story that makes up the plot. An underrated Kubrick gem by many.

Stanley Kubrick, I read, did not want to use artificial light in this film. So candles, lots of candles... Just look at the evening/night scenes, very special. Fascinating film, carefully told at a wonderfully slow pace.

Wonderfully villainous costume drama, in which protagonist Barry Lyndon (Ryan O'Neal) has to survive in the turbulent jungle of ranks, classes and classes. And above all that poisonous cult of masculinity where humiliations are settled with duels and soldiers are used as exchangeable pawns in the hands of those in power. Can a noble person emerge from a patriarchal system where a destiny is shaped by such stringent social norms? Kubrick is like a tease in how he ironizes Barry Lyndon's social climb through a cinematic language where horrific tragedy contrasts sharply with overwhelming beauty. Where the new violently settles, or tries to deal with, the old. Whether it is a flawless Schubert motif on the soundtrack that so aptly fits the sketch of the time, but at the same time entails an element of ridicule. So graceful, playful and yet with a melancholic overtone. Or the visual play of colors that makes the European natural beauty look even more innocent and unapproachable, and the richness of the higher classes even more opulent and excessive. While the outlined decline history is full of falsehood, betrayal, stupid accident and senseless bloodshed.
