The Talented Mr. Ripley plot

"How far would you go to become someone else?"

In the late 1950s, the talented but equally tormented Tom Ripley—after wearing a Princeton jacket that didn't belong to him, and allowing him to play a piano at a garden party—is sent to Italy by playboy Dickie Greenleaf's father to Dickie to return to America. Once arrived, however, Tom becomes close friends with Dickie and his fiancée Marge. He falls for jazz music, Dickie and the luxurious lifestyle... but who or what does he really prefer?

“I always thought it would be better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody.”

The Talented Mr. Ripley has always been a good movie for me. The film is too long and after the death of Dickie it all gets a bit less, but there are a lot of strong sides. It's all very atmospheric and especially the first hour is great. Dickie's extravagant and luxurious life is beautifully portrayed and you can understand that Tom Ripley gets completely addicted to it. Sociopath or not. We see Italy at its best and the jazz music completes it.

Damon and Law are an entertaining duo and actors like Paltrow, Seymour Hoffman and Blanchett can be sent on a message. The second part is a bit less but still good. The subcutaneous tension that has been there all along comes to a head, and it's amusing to watch Ripley talk/wring/beat his way out of any sticky situation. It's not all believable but hey, I just turn a blind eye to this wonderful film.

Second try for this The talented mr. Ripley and again not completely convinced. Just like

I don't find The English patient in Anthony Minghella's films a connection that convinces me of a wow effect. I have the same feeling with Matt Damon. While his performance here was decent, I continue to find him an overrated actor. He was above average in The Departed, but his top performance has to be Good Will Hunting.

The talented mr. Ripley has a long lead-up and enough attention is paid to the characters. Beautiful images of cultural Italy are reviewed and they bring atmosphere to the film. The Mediterranean atmosphere is nicely breathed in and is a plus for the film. Dickie and Tom are polar opposites, one charmismatic and extroverted, the other introverted and shy. The film is based on a lot of coincidences, which threatens credibility. The first part is still decent, but after that I had had it. I could hardly keep my attention there. A decent enough so everything taken into account as far as I'm concerned.
