Oppressive and atmospheric thriller with excellent acts by playboys Delon and Ronet and the world's most beautiful eyes.

In my opinion, the best films by director René Clément date from his early days (1940s, early 1950s). After that, mediocrity is usually trump. This also applies to this fairly routinely made crime film, which, apart from a number of holes in the plot, lacks a few essential elements: tension and surprise and, partly because of this, lasts much too long.

I have the book at home and read it before I saw one of the film adaptations. I have yet to see the version with Matt Damon, so this is my first film adaptation. With some pressure maybe the book is supposedly getting better than the movie and the movie with Damon got 4 Oscar nominations.

Plein Soleil does not have Damon, but it does have Alain Delon, who immediately became an international star with this film. He does lean on the Ripley from the books. Writer Patricia Highsmith was also quite pleased. She died before the 1999 movie, so no idea how she felt about Matt Damon's acclaimed version. Plein Soleil provides the necessary atmosphere and nicely builds up Ripley's character. Beautiful with the warm pastel colors, thanks to cinematographer Henri Decaë who was also responsible for Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, Les Quatre cents coups and Le Samourai. But the music of Nino Rota, known from The Godfather, is even more striking. His music creates a cheerful, yet threatening atmosphere. It is one of his better works.

I haven't seen the 1999 film yet, but I can imagine Hollywood turned it into a real thriller. While Plein Soleil, just like the book, creates the necessary mystery and we get into the head of Ripley with the idea of a smooth intelligent young man, of whom we as a viewer only realize too late that he is not so sympathetic. Author Highsmith wasn't happy with the ending, and while it's not disturbing, it's not that great and I would have preferred to see the end of the book. But still a wonderful movie.
