Le cercle rouge is a French classic that doesn't look out of place in the top 250. Its greatest assets are the extremely realistic and detailed scenes of Vogel's escape and the later jewel robbery.

The escape and what preceded it and what developed after it was top notch. One long, well-constructed developed film scene on which there was hardly anything to criticize. Excellent characters too and the encounter between Vogel and Corey was intense and also technically well done with varying camera angles and close-ups. Corey remains a somewhat mysteriously taciturn, but intriguing man throughout the film. Hyper intelligent too. Vogel ditto, but is rather a bit more reckless.

But the highlight is the jewel robbery that lasts a breathtakingly long time, the tension is cut by the long silences that accompanies the robbery. Because there is no music background, the tension becomes more intense and as a viewer it is almost difficult to move.

Stylish print with also a number of other scenes where you have to keep your attention a little more because of the many characters and the attempt to catch the criminals. Nice movie from Melville!

Fortunately, these kinds of films are still broadcast, but on the Belgian. But that also means nice without advertising interruption. A film and story in which it is mainly about atmosphere with a relatively fast settlement. Not a film under a cheerful French sun, but with many shades of gray, mud, rain, shadow. That street scene of 95% French cars is pure nostalgia. The fascination for American sleds was certainly room for that. We know actor Volonté from the first two Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns. No actor with so much presence without having to do a lot of facial features like Delon. Bourvil, who plays the commissioner, dies the same year the film comes out.

A fugitive criminal and a freed convict stage a theft at a jewelry store on Place Vendôme in Paris, aided by an alcoholic corrupt ex-cop.

This is a very good one by Melville, for me his second best after Le Deuxième Souffle. Follows a classic pattern (before heist / the heist / after the heist) but the story comes completely from the images; the dialogues are very sparse. A brisk pace, sharp moments for example the first western-like meeting between Vogel and Corey and a lot of actions make the 140 minutes fly by. Fortunately no romantic entanglements: women have nothing to say here. Finally, you have a very unusual role of Bourvil as a police commissioner who is on the heels of the jewel thieves. Classic!
