Pretty okay.

When the Mars hype was fairly big, I didn't get much of it, all the better because now that we finally get to see some real images of Mars, it's nice to go through the film versions from 15 years ago.

As is often the case, these films work best as long as the mystery is part of the film. Every explanation makes a movie like this less fun, especially enjoy the first 45 minutes. The mission there, the landing, arriving at the base ... nice adventure work that I can easily enjoy.

When turns out to be able to breathe it suddenly becomes a bit less, if AMEE is also played as enemy the film loses some of its charm again and the algae statement + the spiritual nonsense at the end absolutely didn't have to be.

Fortunately, a film is more than an ending and these videos are also easy to watch. I found the effects not too bad, the acting was decent and Mars occasionally looked nice. The funniest thing is that in about 5 years these movies will probably be super relevant again! Everyone a star then.

Boy, travel through space for six months to reach a mythical planet, then come up with nothing better than a confrontation with the T-101's endoskeleton! An intriguing premise about the possibility of colonizing Mars gets bogged down in a simple thriller about who will survive and who won't, which leaves me totally Siberian when the actors, the characters and the performances are so uninteresting, with dull dialogues, an obligatory but nowhere seriously elaborated philosophical layer (Chantilas' spirituality versus Burchenal's materialism), intrusive and overly heroic music, and at least one Pythonesque laugh-out-loud sequence as the landing pod bounces like a gigantic bunch of pigeons over the surface of Mars (I keep expecting Terry Jones' voices and Michael Palin to hear: "Ow!" "Eee!" "Aah!"). An extra star for the beautiful and sometimes very convincing visuals (partially canceled out by the atmosphere of dated seventies television SF on board the ship) and the presence of two elements that, to my surprise, would reappear in later SF films: the voracious beetles (which reminded me strongly of the all-consuming insects from the remake of The day the earth stood still [2008]) and the way Bowman attached her "space cable" to the floating Gallagher (Jessica Chastain and Matt Damon in The Martian!). But otherwise... no, the only moment when this film really gets exciting is when the beautiful Carrie-Anne Moss suddenly starts walking around in a top.

It sometimes has its charms, the early 00s decoration of this kind of (Mars) science fiction films. Overall, it's just entertaining and there isn't a dull moment in the film. But they have to stop with those trite romances. The one between Kilmer and Moss in this film is very poorly portrayed. You hardly come across them worse than this, but this gives the film a campy quality again.

Well, they tried something and I've seen worse. This isn't a deadly serious film anyway, so it shouldn't be judged that way.
