“If only he could talk.”

Deserved Oscar winner. Why I put off watching this movie for so long is a mystery, because The Artist is a piece of art. The film shows what you can achieve with just facial expressions and atmospheric music. The music in particular cannot be praised enough.

The film starts very strong and I wondered if the film could maintain the high level. The answer is a resounding 'yes'. Even without a voice, I had to laugh out loud several times. Dujardin and Bejo are incomparable and the direction of Hazanavicius is craftsmanship. Goodman and Cromwell also have nice supporting roles. And anyone who has seen The Artist will never forget the dog. Pure movie magic.

The artist is a very nostalgic film that goes back to the early years of film and the transition to the first films with sound. Original premise and daring, but absolutely successful in its purpose! I was really drawn in by the authenticity of the film. It must have been my first silent film and today's techniques made it a pleasant viewing piece. Because it is a silent film, you can pay extra attention to the visual (mimicking, expression and actions of the actors). You just have to do it to keep a film interesting and understandable for the viewer without dialogue. People used to know no better, now you are used to something completely different. So cheers!

Old hands like Goodman and Cromwell are visibly enjoying themselves, but it's Dujardin and Bejo who simply do it brilliantly. And of course we must not forget the dog: moving, funny and refreshing! The scene where George experiences sound was also beautiful. Not the top film in terms of content, but top technically and in terms of acting. However, the entire film is permeated with magic and love. The match between Dujardin and Bejo is the greatest and takes the film to a higher and credible level. Rightly awarded multiple times!

Very special movie. The evolution of the film (silent to talkies) is nicely illustrated, but you keep watching/listening to Valentin's point of view throughout the film. Although he hears everything (duh), the director deliberately chooses silence. There are two deviations from this: in a dream (ingeniously conceived) and at the very end. And as the silent movie agrees, the film is nicely accompanied by the necessary music, pancartes and a nice-looking Miller. Add to that the gags (ie dog tricks, woman dancing with coat rack, man wearing costume through shop window, shadow, smaller versions of characters from his flop movie when he's had too much to drink), and you understand that you are watching a very special movie. The silent film is back, with this quite classic.
