First watched The Thing (1982) and then The Thing From Another World (1951). Technically, there's no denying that The Thing was created after 30 years of technological advancement. In addition, John Carpenter did not have to consider censorship unlike Howard Hawks. So you shouldn't watch TTFAW for the gore, although there is a severed arm in the film, which may have been shocking at the time. Nevertheless, and all things considered, I think TTFAW is a fine production, with a delightful Margaret Sheridan and a typical fifties atmosphere, with jazzy tunes in the recreation room. Dimitri Tiomkin's score was also very enjoyable, also with the use of theremin, which was typical of science fiction at the time. At first I thought that Tiomkin was influenced by Bernard Herrmann and his score for The Day The Earth Stood Still (also from 1951) but apparently this film was only released afterwards. While Herrmann often gets credit as a trendsetter for the use of the theremin.

Started out pretty good, but that monster was a disappointment.

The Thing from Another World is an outdated production. It clearly comes from an era when horror movie making relied heavily on people in crazy suits.

What strikes me while watching is that in these kinds of films there is no good support in the form of a score. Every now and then a typical fifties string orchestra whines through, but this kind of music can never evoke tension for me. As a result, no subcutaneous tension is cultivated and I can also find it difficult to find it exciting.

You are mainly watching a chat film in which characters talk, talk, talk and after a while also decide to talk to each other. So a lot of talk. All the conclusions drawn by this feel a bit artificial, because in the end it is one big theater piece. Those 3 times that Frankenstein, how I mean the space creature, shows up it feels a bit clumsy. That lasts until half of the film, because until then people are mainly (you guessed it) talking to each other. And no, it's not annoying to watch, the actors do a great job and the sets are okay to watch. That was not too bad for me when I pressed the DVD in. But it still feels like a big play.

The horror genre only became more refined from the 60s and only really exciting from the 70s. Also thanks to the fact that musical scores became really exciting and could be applied more subtly.

The Thing from Another World is an okay movie if you ignore the whole horror/sf part.

2.5*
