When you think of sci-fi films from the 50s full of special effects, you quickly think of hopelessly dated monster flicks. But The Incredible Shrinking Man is of a completely different caliber. A very simple starting point and a very strong execution. Richard Matheson originally wanted the film to be told through flashbacks, but the studio insisted on a linear narrative. Fortunately, the introduction is interesting enough. The film is not exciting in the first half, but mainly focuses on the drama. Sometimes it gets very witty, the image of Scott at a table with a huge cup of coffee is hilarious. But the thrills don't begin until Scott is left home alone and later ends up in the basement. The much-discussed sequences with the cat are fantastic and the spider still gives me the creeps. Of course, certain effects of a film that is more than 60 years old are now somewhat dated, but a part still looks surprisingly good. But it is presumably unbelievably charming.

4 stars.

Excellent film about a man who shrinks further and further due to an inexplicable phenomenon. Well worked out and not just visually. Inventive sets where, of course, the perspective is played a lot. Furthermore, it is all quite adventurous with a few exciting moments and an unconventional ending. The special effects are outdated, but that doesn't detract from the whole.

Brilliant, those sets and props in the basement area! Here and there it could have been a bit better in terms of proportions, and at first I sometimes had to chuckle a bit with, for example, that big receiver of the telephone and the sulking behavior of Carey that is more reminiscent of Jiskefet and then there is the heavily unnecessary ending, but swa. Crazy that this one never got a worthy remake or rehash, to my knowledge...?
