The Purge: Election Year plot

"Keep America great"

It's been two years since Leo Barnes held back from taking revenge on Purge Night. He is now Senator Charlie Roan's chief of security, with a mission to protect her in the fight for the presidency and survive the annual ritual that puts the poor and innocent on edge. Then, when betrayal takes place, they are forced to take to the streets. Precisely on the evening when no help is available.

Long awaited, sadly disappointed.

The movie is too erratic. It starts well, but soon I felt the tension disappear. Not an ounce of danger was palpable. This time I was not on the edge of my seat, something I had hoped for. It doesn't help that scenes are killed before it can even get exciting (Think of the sweet 16 girls, they were finished off quickly). Where I was quite shocked in the previous parts , that was not the case here.

The movie feels different. More 'serious', more pressed down (political) messages. Frank Grillo sometimes didn't seem to feel like it anymore, I couldn't get any connection with the characters this time. Probably because they were made of cardboard. Even with the shop owner, who was expected to sympathize with him, does not come out well.

The action is of varying level. It's the little moments, like when they drove through town in the car (after rescuing the harassed pair from murderous tourists) and seeing what's going on), those moments are worth the effort. Furthermore, a lot of hypocritical morality and a pointing finger at politics, the weapons policy and the violence that results.

This is the type of movie you put on because Netflix offers it, not necessarily because you want to see the movie yourself. So I was hoping for something blandly entertained, not a masterpiece or anything. Still, the film is disappointing. There are some nice ideas here and there, but in the end it all gets bogged down in bland piew piew action scenes and laughable slowmos. Plot-technically you shouldn't expect anything from this either, it's a nice concept completely shit and ill-considered. Characters are mostly annoying, and the movie doesn't show exactly what you're hoping for by portraying every lawless action as gunshot or knife stab. drowsy.

Pretty nice.

The film describes the Purge concept at a certain point as "Halloween for adults", they should have listened a little more themselves, because when the series responds to this, the level is clearly the highest. Again, it is striking that the first scenes on the street are by far the best.

The mix of wacky/creepy dressing up and gory murder is just cool. It also seems as if DeMonaco also enjoys the scenes best, because audiovisually they always stand out. The "attack" on the deli was especially welcome here. Unfortunately, that part of the film again remains relatively limited.

When more action and thriller elements are added and more attention is paid to the plot, the film slowly slides back to mediocrity. That last fight between Grillo and the main bad guy, for example, is unnecessary and lousy. Oh well, I'll continue to enjoy myself with it, probably because I don't watch the films too quickly after each other, but afterwards you always have the feeling that it could and should have been better.

3.0*
