Riphagen plot

During the Second World War, the notorious Amsterdam criminal Dries Riphagen (Jeroen van Koningsbrugge) worked fanatically with the Nazis. Riphagen becomes immeasurably rich by tracking down, extorting and betraying Jewish people in hiding, and feels untouchable in the process. But when he betrays an important resistance group, the young policeman and resistance fighter Jan van Liempd (Kay Greidanus) starts hunting him.

Riphagen is ultimately a crime film. Despite the genre designation here, I saw a crime-oriented one-man show about an equally intriguing and repulsive person from Dutch war history.

Ultimately, it is not Jeroen van Koningsbrugge's fault that Riphagen disappointed me. The man does what he can, and his criminal swagger alone gives him an edge for this role. It takes a lot to carry this film, and as far as I'm concerned Van Koningsbrugge does that enough.

I had much more trouble with the appallingly weak scenario. In advance I had hoped to be able to see a few things about the Netherlands in wartime, but that is hardly possible. Instead, director Pieter Kuijpers introduces police officer Jan van Liempt (Kay Greidanus). After the very solid first half hour, in which we actually see Riphagen's mercilessness best on screen, the film quickly lapses into a one-sided manhunt, in which Greidanus' character is an important pivot.

And that stuck, because not only the scenario is weak; the execution often leaves much to be desired. The cast is unbelievable, which means that the dialogues are all too often the Achilles' heel in whether or not a scene succeeds.

What the film has to offer is that, despite its predictability, she looks away smoothly (and that for 130 minutes). However, I had hoped for much more.

2.5*

Fortunately, we can make good films about WWII in the Netherlands, with a few exceptions. But usually things go well for the Dutch makers, I think it is also because that period was only recently and, especially in recent years, importance is attached to presenting such a story as faithfully as possible.

With this role, Van Koningsbrugge shows that he can indeed act, he portrays the opportunistic and narcissistic figure of Riphagen in a great way. Too bad that some of the supporting roles are hopeless, but you can still see that good supporting roles, however small, are of great importance for a film. Especially Sluysman and Sloots fall through the basket. Greidanus plays properly, but the roles of the Germans, cringing, are far too stereotypical. It's a shame, the rest of the movie is just right. The setting, the time frame that is given, the music, everything is perfectly fine and also means that you constantly keep the attention on the film.

Too bad about some acting performances, otherwise the film would certainly have scored higher with me, but still an excellent Dutch film and other makers may want to look at that.

What an asshole that Riphagen you just want to strangle that guy yourself through your picture tube. Good movie so because I was completely done with that guy and just when you think that dirty stinker can't become hateful anymore, he does something again. Nice Amsterdam accent by van Koningsbrugge and I think he acts really strong.

I am a very big fan of the Dutch film and this is another excellent one for the list.
