Together with his brother, Gijs van Hall, he devises a risky construction to take out large loans to finance the resistance. If that is not enough, the brothers commit the largest bank fraud in Dutch history: tens of millions of guilders are funneled out of the Dutch bank under the eye of the occupiers.

After returning home on Saturday evening due to a sold out crowd (!), attempt two last night. Fortunately it was a lot quieter, so we had plenty of space to experience this great film.

WW2 movies often don't interest me that much. Apart from a few exceptions, I often have the feeling that I am looking at more or less the same story, with the same tricks: cold, poverty, bicycles, unyielding Dutch, stereotypical Germans and all of this shrouded in gray-green tones.

That's different in this movie. It soon becomes clear that there are also enough Nazi sympathizers on the side of the Dutch, and that action must be taken against them in the greatest secrecy. It's also nice that the film is not set in the cold polders, but mainly in beautiful old cities, which greatly contribute to the atmosphere of the film.

I like the acting, but not spectacular. Some dialogues come across a bit wooden, and heroic statements often come across as a bit more forced in Dutch than in English.

I found negatives in the way Atsma's family was developed. Very clichéd, and a bit tacky. I also thought the flashbacks with the drowning boy and the son who falls from the tree were quite cheap. It didn't add much in my opinion.

The suspense was the film's biggest asset. Although the film is a bit long (all that talk about banking is quite tough, especially in the beginning of the film) the tension remains palpable until the end. You keep wondering if they will be discovered, how, and by whom they will be betrayed.

Yet another aspect of WWII: financing resistance movements.

Interesting and fascinating to hear all this on the basis of a very well constructed film.

The classic scenes, specific to the subject, are also there, of course, but there is also abundant play on the effort and the human reactions to the ever-threatening situation.

Atmospheric image of the time and good acting.
