"Marx was a Jew. The Communist Party is run by Jews."

Watched on Netflix, now you really notice how good Der Untergang actually was. This American film is much more stereotypical.

I thought Robert Carlyle was quite nice as Hitler but not nearly as strong as Bruno Ganz. In my opinion they could have made the film better in German, look crazy English Nazis. Peter Stormare and Peter O'Toole also played well. There is not much to say about the acting itself.

It all started pretty well, although I found the story about Hitler's youth very mediocre. But as it progresses some weird sub-plots are thrown in and unproven theories worked out. Why does Hitler have to be portrayed as a pedophile and liar (he was, of course, but I mean in his private life). I also thought the scene where he kicks a dog lame was ridiculous, just letting typical Americans be what kind of person they are with absurd things like animal cruelty. The relationship with Eva Braun is also being rushed, we see nothing of the SS and it seems as if you have to feel sorry for the SA (although there were anti-Semitic goons who were fond of violence).

Visually it was sometimes just a bit too cheap. Costumes and sets were decent in themselves and the opening music was nice.

All in all, it was quite an entertaining mini-series, not too long. But certainly could have been better.

This Emmy winner turned out to be one big disappointment. There is little that is good about this TV movie/miniseries. Bad cardboard sets, soap-like, a lot of sensationalism, bad acting, dissimilar characters, missing characters (including Himmler), not true to the facts, a story that is told with a big-step-fast-home pace, messy , and a Hitler who is depicted as a clown, loser, animal abuser, etc. In other words, Hitler was not a human being but a loser, a monster and a devil of which only the trident and the horns are missing. And that's far from the truth, Hitler was a human being, a terrible human being (to put it mildly), but one who, thanks to his charisma (which is nowhere to be seen in the film), got crowds after him. That's exactly what's scary about Hitler, while the film here tries to make him an uncharismatic bastard and a monster full of clichés. I don't think Hitler needs that, in real life he is scary enough as long as they portray him as he was.

This miniseries has ended with the typical kick that the winner gives to the loser by making fun of the enemy. Hitler who is called a Jew and almost whimpering has to beg a Jew for a medal, nonsense very much only intended to embarrass Hitler with this film. As if that is necessary. 1*. Give me Der Untergang (2004).

And just to be clear, that I give 1 star to this b-movie does not mean that I have the slightest sympathy for Hitler, on the contrary. But a film that pretends to be true and that mixes so much nonsense between the facts deserves nothing else, especially if it also falls seriously short on all cinematic qualities.
