A beautiful setting containing a mystery that, although intriguing, is unfortunately not very exciting.

The setting determines the atmosphere. Dirty 19th century London is always a hit. In that London a theater where frivolous, burlesque and daring arts are performed. A beautiful decor. The story moves, as it were, in and around the theatre. And that is a fine thread.

The story reads exciting but that is not too bad in the execution. The storytelling format is quite nice. Two storylines that dance around each other. One follows an inspector investigating the murders. A solid, straight and clear line. Not exciting, but the inspector's troubles do provide a certain empathy.

The other line traces the events leading up to the murder investigation through testimonials and deductions. Witnesses and suspects fill in that part of the story. Many suspects and many witnesses. Many perspectives and many impressions. It's all a bit too much.

As a storytelling format it looks fun and lively. The many faces and the many points of view resulting from the choice of this form simultaneously prevent a feeling of oppression. The shape distracts too much. The essential mystery has been incorporated too playfully. The edge-of-the-seat feeling just doesn't come.

The acting is good by the way. Wonderfully British. The dialogues may also be there due to their fine use of language. Two nice extra bonuses, as far as I'm concerned.

There are not enough bonuses to make it a very good film.

Beautifully crafted and filmed murder mystery starring Bill Nighy as John Kildare, a detective in Victorian London who has never been able to unmask the serial killer responsible for a series of grisly murders nicknamed The Limehouse Murders long ago. When he becomes involved in the investigation into the death of John Cree [Sam Reid], for which his wife and music hall star Lizzie [Olivia Cooke] has been sentenced, he sees a connection to the Limehouse Murders. With Lizzie's help, he hopes to finally unmask the Limehouse Golem.

Juan Carlos knows how to bring Victorian London to life in a beautiful way, especially in the Music Hall scenes in which the cast convincingly play the often vulgar acts. The mystery is intriguing, especially because of the strong cast and clever use of flashbacks. The denouement is truly a surprise and makes this a must for genre fans.

Just not.

The Limehouse Golem can call itself a very good example of the English TV movie. The thick acting and the exaggerated amount of attention to detail can be called very English, in my opinion. Furthermore, it is mainly the accents and the dialogues themselves that dot the i's and cross the t's for this conclusion.

This film has a very well-known cast and there is nothing wrong with the acting. Nighy continues to play with a very strong charm and is perfect for his role. However, he does not get much depth, while his role does demand it from him. Cooke, on the other hand, was cast incorrectly, and in this way is actually the only outsider of the film. A little too forced and, above all, too little charm.

The story itself tries to become a clever and mysterious whole with tricks, the truth is unfortunately that it as a whole does not have too much to do. Various flashbacks with all potential perpetrators do not sufficiently divert the viewer, and it soon becomes clear that it mainly tries to cover the mediocre story itself with visual indulgence.

Furthermore, it is also somewhat disappointing in terms of horror. The film looks beautiful with a strong atmosphere and an abundance of detail, which should sometimes provide a good piece of horror. It is a pity, however, that the film never wants to become exciting and the murders, which do look bloody, are never properly portrayed. It is mainly the somewhat safe direction that throws a spanner in the works.

Furthermore, the film looks too good to get a solid fail, but the long whole has too little substantive power to make an impression. The acting is strong, the visual interpretation too, but The Limehouse Golem pretty much ends there. It was a good try, but they have to try a little harder to completely wrap me up with it.
