The idea is nice, but unfortunately the execution is a lot less so. With the Nazi zombie super soldiers and certainly with the island setting it could have been a killer cult horror, but there wasn't much to it. The main problem is actually that not much happens; not at all for the first 45 minutes, and after that there are only a few more interesting scenes. And no, that is not because atmosphere needs to be built or that it is a slow burner or something like that. When the 'zombies' slowly appear on the scene, it occasionally becomes nice, although they do not come across as very threatening, there is little real tension and certainly little gore or violence. There are still some nice moments, especially when the soldiers come out of the water, it looks pretty cool every now and then. And the setting on and around a small island is also nicely done. But all in all, this is a disappointing work.

This cult favorite relies mainly on suspense and a few quite effective shock moments. There is hardly any gore or extreme violence, but that is no objection at all. The story concerns a group of friends who are mysteriously stranded on an island and terrorized by Nazi zombies who have escaped from a shipwreck that has recently surfaced. John Carradine has a small role early in the film and Peter Cushing is excellent as the island's sole inhabitant, a man with a particularly questionable past. The acting from the male leads is not very good and the sexy Brooke Adams and DJ Sidney have little to do, but this is well directed, beautifully filmed - with underwater photography by Irving Pare - and provided with an atmospheric musical score by Richard Einhorn.

A nice film that mainly relies on the interaction between the characters, threatened by an external enemy. The external enemy in this case consists of a corps of Nazi zombies that don't seem that scary. This certainly has to do with the numerous daytime scenes, which in any case gives less atmosphere for a horror film. Night scenes cost more money and perhaps that money was not present in this low budget affair. Yet there are also positives, such as the beautiful location and the presence of legend Peter Cushing.

Last but not least, I enjoyed the soundtrack. A creation of Richard Einhorn and pioneering electronics. Cold dark sounds coming from primitive analog synths. One of the first soundtracks of this kind. This was also recently released on vinyl, which indicates the cult status of the film and music. For me, the music has more value than the film itself.
