Mmmmm, an hour and a half watching Susan George in a short skirt with her plump breasts sticking out, which we also almost get to see. She plays an excellent role here as a babysitter, who is first terrified by her so-called funny boyfriend and then by the father of the boy she has to look after, who has escaped from the madhouse.

Don't get the comments that this is all so outdated. Am I that old fashioned? Can contemporary movie viewers only appreciate modern special effects? I thought it was one heck of a thriller. This has nothing to do with horror. There must always be an element of inexplicability, of mystery, in horror. That is not the case here. With excellent acting, especially from George and Ian Bannen as the crazy Brian. You can see the craftsmanship of a director like Peter Collinson and his screenwriter. British top class, and it does not deny itself, even though the film dates from 1971. Also nice for the atmosphere of that time.

Fright is an important film in the development of the Slasher genre. The film is clearly a blueprint for the later classic Halloween (Film, 1978) - MovieMeter.nl.

In addition, the film also addresses the position of women in these types of films. It's a kind of Beauty & the Beast but then as a horror variant. The woman is terrified and eventually fights back with everything she's got. Here it is all still quite mild and well-behaved, but a long history of horror films builds on this concept.

It must also be said that the acting is convincing. Leading actress Susan George plays the ideal victim and Ian Bannen contrasts it with a fine psychopath. The screenplay is well put together and it is easy to work towards a good climax.

Fright is certainly not a masterpiece, but it does make an impression in the end. It is a daring film for the time in which it was made.

Not a classic, but a very interesting film.

Now on Netflix.

Great thriller/drama set in the English countryside. Couleur locale with the isolated typical country house that lends itself perfectly to being stalked by a psychopath. Characters that excel in phlegmatics and the occasional tongue in cheek. All very British and very entertaining. Can be seen as a precursor of Halloween in terms of core story, but actually Fright has a much more complex storyline. The whole is beautifully portrayed with low angle cameras that underline the threat and shots that put you as a viewer in the position of the voyeur. Good acting performances. Some cops do react very phlegmatic but ok why not. Susan George is doing fine. With Straw Dogs she delivered an unforgettable classic in the same year. This Fright has been lost and overshadowed by later thrillers/horrors. A nice viewing for fans of more nuanced psychological thrillers and Britishness.
