Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer plot

"He's not Freddy. He's not Jason. He's real."

Calculating and aloof serial killer Henry Lee Lucas (Michael Rooker) shares an apartment with the humble Otis (Tom Towles). When Otis' younger sister Becky (Tracy Arnold) comes to stay, she seems to get into Henry's sensitive side. But in the meantime, Otis and Henry are also increasingly going out together, and that is not without consequences. Loosely based on the life of serial killer Henry Lee Lucas.

revised. The film no longer has the impact it used to have (I saw it on vhs in the early 90s), but it is still an intense and, above all, disturbing piece of work. The cold and distant tone fits well with the almost documentary-like visual approach; too bad that the exaggerated and quite clumsy sound effects throw a spanner in the works at crucial moments. The whole thing would probably have been more effective without music and such misguided effects. The most gruesome scene is where Henry and Otis are watching a home invasion they filmed together and Henry asks Otis while he rewinds the tape: "What are you doing?". Otis: "I wanna watch it again". brrrrr.

Couldn't remember seeing this one (after this viewing, I knew this for sure, would have stayed with it otherwise) and was 1 of the movies from the top 300 horror list here on MM, which I definitely wanted to see, since this one is also regularly featured in other top lists and considered fairly disturbing, now was the time to give this one a go. There is a wonderfully gray atmosphere anyway and we follow the life of a serial killer and that is very well presented, realistically sick, and whether this is partly based on a true serial killer or not, in itself this is always a possibility, these people are simply there, then, now and always and that fact gives such films an extra dimension. That is why I often find such films harder than many horror films and therefore a direct hit. And even though this film already has a considerable age, this has never turned out to be a flaw with this film. Acting is of a high level and they perform it perfectly, how we, the viewer, should experience it according to the director. Everything was just right for me and I experienced this film as a special viewing experience. So it was really high time to watch this one, I'm a bit ashamed that I left this one aside for so long. I am happy to give this a full 10/10 and catapult it straight into my top10.

Don't get me wrong: I certainly don't legitimize what serial killers do, nor do I want to conveniently portray them as victims. I just find the overwhelming interest in these types of criminals in fiction and in the media quite suspicious. Apparently, what serial killers do, and that they often get away with it for a long time too, appeals to something very dark in ourselves. That is why the general public wants to know everything about them, but at the same time they must also be able to morally condemn them and brand them as 'the other'. While the main reason good citizens do not give in to aggressive or murderous impulses is that this would have legal consequences for them. Psychopaths (a classification that applies to most serial killers) are not deterred by this, and that aspect fascinates Henk and Ingrid immensely.

Regarding Henry..., director McNoughton said in a later interview that he found the portrayal of most serial killers in the myriad slashers of the 1980s completely unrealistic, interchangeable and unmemorable: they were forgotten once they were released. left the cinema. With Henry... , he, along with creators and cast, wanted to present examples of serial killers that were rooted in reality, and that you might encounter outside the cinema - most likely for the last time.
