The Muppets plot

"Get ready for Muppet domination."

Walter is a sweet, slightly naive twenty-something who is the roommate and best friend of Gary (Jason Segel). They are both fans of The Muppets, although that is a bit strange for Walter because he is a doll himself. Still, it is his biggest dream to meet his well-known congeners one day. When the two friends discover that the Muppet Theater is in danger, they set out to reunite Kermit, Miss Piggy and everyone else to put on a great show.

A gentle, cheerful film that fortunately does not take itself too seriously. Many of the jokes are mostly meta-humor (the travel map, the musical montage, the villains with their maniacal laughter) and sometimes it felt like I was watching a parody of the genre. That makes it somehow refreshing and sharp, but sometimes it was just a bit too much of a good thing.

Very nice to see all the Muppets of yesteryear pass in review. In terms of live action cast, Jason Segel was fine for the role of Gary. Amy Adams was a little less suitable for me; I mainly know her from drama films and her somewhat serious appearance seems to lend itself better to that than to a light comedy.

Also some nice cameos and songs.

Of course a film like this relies heavily on the nostalgic character and that made me melancholy at the same time. In the past, a Muppets film could 'just' be about The Muppets, for example a pleasant trip to Manhattan.

That a Muppet movie today can only be about faded glory and comebacks makes you realize how long ago it was the Muppets were 'hot' and how old you have become. It's that Fozzie wasn't under a bridge sipping a bottle of Whiskey and Gonzo wasn't on heroin, but it still made me feel a little gloomy.

Although hopefully with these Muppets a new era of entertainment has dawned for our plush doll friends, because this cynical fucking world can't do without them. Check out The Muppets Most Wanted coming soon!

"Mahna, Mahna!!" A film that tackles the nostalgia factor very well.

A film that doesn't take itself quite seriously. And although they are a somewhat forgotten act, the makers know that there are still people who still love The Muppets.

The film responds well to this with the new character Walter, who is still a big fan of the Muppets. He, Segel and Adams embark on a journey to absorb the past glory of the Muppets. After the big shock, they finally meet Kermit, and in a fun montage they pick up the other Muppets too. There and the show at the end provide the best moments in the film. The rest of what's in between isn't all that. Nice. But no more than that. The jokes are just not quite right and some of the nicest characters are pushed to the background. There it makes room for a mediocre subplot by the oil baron, who is played great by Cooper. Segel is a bit dwarfed by the overload of Muppets of course, but knows that and makes use of it. Adams is a very nice addition. She does not have a major role in the film. But she is also very nice to watch in a small role.

A fun movie that makes good use of what people expect from The Muppets. The musical part would have been a nice thing if it weren't for the fact that most of the songs are not of a very high level. Nevertheless, Rainbow Connection still works. Just like in the series, very nice supporting roles and cameos from some big stars.
