Hasta la Vista! plot

Three young guys love wine and women. They are happy to taste the first, but they have never been able to taste the second. Under the guise of a wine tour, the three travel to Spain to finally get off the ground. Nothing will stop them. Certainly not the fact that the first is blind, the second is in a wheelchair and the third is completely paralyzed.

Okay.

Film that is supported by the trio and in particular the different sides of their relationship. Now and then a little laugh at each other's handicap, then again looking for support from each other, but also occasionally being annoying or being an asshole. Because of the theme you would expect that the characters would be treated with silk gloves, which is fortunately not the case.

The first half hour is a bit slow. As a viewer, you are mainly waiting for the road trip, but there is still some unnecessary hesitation about that, with parents who are difficult and such. The road trip is also fairly predictable in terms of structure (especially the storyline with the supervisor), but it does work. In the end it is a fairly pleasant trip, as a viewer it is not annoying to follow along.

You could see the ending coming from far away, I didn't find it very emotional either, but it is a worthy end for the film. It also doesn't last too long after that, something I was happy about. That way it all stays just light enough and the charm of the trio remains intact, even if at the end they only end up with just the two of them.

I wouldn't call it a high flyer, but it was nice to have seen it once.

About Hasta la Vista! I have heard a lot over the years. With Ben X (another gem from Belgian soil) in mind, I couldn't let this one pass me by once it came up on Netflix.

As a result, I am also of the opinion that this title has found a good balance between humor and drama in which people with disabilities are treated with respect without being considered pathetic. Because that's what the protagonists want to be anything but! This perfectly balanced combination makes Hasta la Vista! a topper for me, and damn maybe those Belgians still have a decent talent for filmmaking?

Road movie about three best friends who, for various reasons, are largely dependent on others in their daily lives. But now they want to experience life without the intervention of their parents. In a shabby van with a gruff driver, they set out on a journey to Spain, where they hope to lose their virginity in a famous brothel. Of course, the journey is not a bed of roses. The screenplay by Pieter de Clercq plays with the limitations of the protagonists in an entertaining but sufficiently respectful way and the first half is full of surprising, funny moments. Tom Audenaert has the best moments as the blind Jozef and Isabelle de Hertogh scores as the grumpy driver. But after an entertaining first hour it unfortunately still gets bogged down in comical and melodramatic clichés and the surprises are over.
