The Princess plot

"Her life. Our obsession."

The tragic death of Diana Spencer on August 31, 1997 caused a public outburst of grief unlike anything England had experienced before. Her life was public property. So is her death. Director Ed Perkins, at the age of 11, witnessed the shock the news caused and how this event dominated the media. From this perspective, without a voice-over and solely on the basis of archive footage, 'The Princess' is a confrontational chronicle about the public life and death of the beloved princess. The shy young woman she was when the paparazzi first met her at her house, her charming performance during the Australia tour and the heartbreaking scene where her young children walk behind her coffin.

Compilation of television images of and about Diana Spencer from 1981, when she (literally) came into the picture as the possible fiancée of Prince Charles, until the mourning ceremonies after her tragic death in 1997. Since Lady Di was the most photographed woman in the world during that period , Perkins deserves praise for the way he has found a balance between frequently shown material, forgotten archive footage and amateur material. The opening immediately makes it clear that this is not a conventional portrait and Perkins leaves the commentary about Diana to the people who can be seen or heard, thereby mainly responding to the changing ideas that the press, the people, politicians and other public figures had about Diana. The most important conclusion: everyone had an opinion, opinions were almost always divided and Diana had a love/hate relationship with the media. An excellent starting point for those who know Lady Di mainly by name, a nice addition/memory for those who experienced the period.

Without a "narrator" who explains Diana's life, so that we have the impression that we are being presented with a series of reports and that seems fine to me.

I am not much of a royal family follower myself, so the documentary provided a rewarding reminder and explanation of what I knew in broad terms about Princess D's life.

And without coming to decisions in a certain direction, still a special woman.

Watched with interest, certainly.
