Failed.

The intentions are good, and I understand what the film wanted to do with Jerry and his situation, but it didn't come across at all. At times much too slow, a bit confused, and visually it doesn't do much either. Nicholson's acting is then one of the plus points in this little thing.

2*

Too slow film with pitiful performances by Benicio Del Toro and Jack Nicholson. The latter, in particular, is overacting or staring at a point in the distance and then suddenly, as if hit by an electric shock, his head turns a quarter turn... ok, you can slowly become obsessed with a case , but to overact like that... I find it incomprehensible that about 98% of the opinions emphasize the greatness of Nicholson's acting performance...

Robin Wright and especially Mickey Rourke are the only ones who act at a high level here .. not really convinced of Eckhart, but yes, I never knew how to act well...

There are also some things that are not quite right... Why don't the police make the connection with the expected killer when they see a big black car involved in an accident? However, they knew that the suspect was driving a large, black car. It also seems very unlikely to me that Jerry/Nicholson would never have heard later that a fatal accident occurred that day with a large black car, and could therefore make the connection as such himself... And finally, both the first suspect (Father Noonan), as the later main suspect (Oliver from the chocolate shop) apparently have a predilection for hedgehogs... That seems a bit too much of a coincidence to me.

Good film, mainly because of the environment with the accompanying great atmosphere. The luxury cast also had something. Nicholson doesn't even have to say anything to impress. Also nice to see Rourke (even if only briefly) before a truck has run over his face. Mirren was disappointing, but Eckhart played the smug cop quite well. The film remained fascinating and certainly towards the end the tension also increased, although it was clear at a fairly early stage where it was going to end. Too bad the missing girl was no longer featured. Penn has done a great job with this film.
