A Time to Kill plot

"Experience a time you'll never forget."

The story is about a black man's struggle for justice in modern-day America. Carl Lee's daughter is brutally raped. The perpetrators are arrested, but before they can be convicted, Carl Lee takes the law into his own hands and shoots the perpetrators dead. Young lawyer Jake Brigance takes on the defense of Carl Lee. He is therefore not popular among the mostly local Ku Klux Klan-minded population. As a precaution, he sends his wife and child to a safe place and continues his lonely struggle with law student Ellen Roark.

Minor setback.

Could have been a nice movie, where it isn't that A Time to Kill is told so incredibly slow and uninteresting.

The cast deserves a much better script. McConaughey, L. Jackson, Spacey, Bullock, Sutherland jr & sr, Platt, Judd are not the least names and certainly do a good job, but it still hurts. There are some nice bits in it, but nothing memorable. At times the sentiment was too thick on top of it. Also, half an hour could have been cut off the playing time.

2.5*.

What a masterful movie this is. I respect the reviews as long-winded, mediocre cliché, etc. but when I'm 'in' the film I don't notice this. Very strong acting from McConaughey, Bullock, Jackson, Spacey and the Sutherland's. Sandra Bullock also shows in this film that she really belongs on the silver screen. Seen it now for the second time and going to see him again in the future. My advice: watch!

Best Grisham film adaptation that is also superbly acted. Sometimes movies bore me after half an hour, here it couldn't last long enough. McConaughey as attorney Brigance can act; he actually carries the film on his shoulders. That was the first movie I saw with him a quarter of a century ago. Bullock is less for me, but she does blow energy into the film in her own way.

On the one hand, a fascinating courtroom drama in which determining the guilt/innocence of the accused is not an obvious choice. In addition, there is also a lot going on outside the court and that gives the film a strong flow : the KKK intimidation, the Brigance family, "Mickey Mouse" ... Downside (and I certainly agree with the lowest voices), is the emotional circus at the end with Brigance's empathy speech. In the end, this was unsuccessful. hate it. But still a 4*
