Legends of the Fall plot

"After the Fall from Innocence the Legend begins."

After his wife deserts him, Colonel Ludlow, an old cavalry officer, is left alone in his remote home in Montana to raise his three sons. Alfred, the eldest, is the most reasonable. He has a sense of business and politics. The rambunctious Samuel is always ready to engage in indefensible political affairs. The Colonel has a special affection for Tristan, who shares his sympathies for the Native Americans. After college, Samuel returns with a betrothed, Susannah. Delighted by the presence of a woman under their roof, the four men go out of their way to teach her how to ride a horse and shoot. Soon Susannah and Tristan click very well. Then World War I breaks out and Samuel leaves to fight alongside the Canadians...

Another great film from Zwick. After seeing Glory last week I knew I had to move on with the body of work and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The romance is much richer in this film, but it is especially the character building that makes this film so strong and managed to move me two or three times. Brad Pitt is a good actor anyway and has a nose for good scripts if you look at his filmography. Hopkins just the same and I thought he played very strong. Julia Ormond is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen, although her acting talent isn't exactly the same. Brad Pitt's two brothers are also doing well.

I especially liked the first hour and in the second the film seems to end several times. The drama is too exaggerated that it eventually becomes unbelievable. That was the biggest downside in my experience. I really liked the music and I was barely bothered by the slower pacing. This movie looked like a train. I do think it will get less after a rewatch, but that won't be for soon.

Legends of the Fall tells the story of an old colonel who raises his three sons on a remote estate in Montana. Alfred, the eldest, is the wisest of the three and wants to go into politics. Samuel wants to prove himself on the battlefield just like his father. Tristan has great affection for the Indians and increasingly sees himself as one of them. Samuel becomes engaged to Susannah, but then World War I breaks out. Alfred and Samuel enlist against their father's will as volunteers in the Canadian Army, Tristan comes along to protect Samuel.

A great historical drama. Partly a western setting, a war film and a crime film, but above all romance and family drama. Beautiful shots of the wild landscape and good acting by Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins and Aidan Quinn in particular. James Horner, as always, delivers a fine soundtrack (which here and there was a bit reminiscent of Dances with Wolves).

Watched on the recommendation of a colleague whose film taste is decent in my opinion. This Legends of the fall fell by the wayside a bit. I am intrigued anyway and extra wary when passages about WWI pass by. In this movie this was crying with the cap on and this was pure refill. Very sad and useless scenes full of mistakes. For example, in February 1915 no footballs were thrown into no man's land, there was hardly any mention of mustard gas (or other gas) and I may be wrong, but February 1915 was still a little too early to see organized troops of the Canadian Expeditionary Force ( CEF ) at the front. That was at the earliest in March at the battle of Neuve-Chapelle.

For the rest, this is a romantic film with the necessary clichés and drama. A quadrilateral relationship with three roosters and one hen. That drama is accentuated with extra sentimentality with the necessary strings and other Hollywood attributes. Also disturbing were Susannah's perfect skills in riding or shooting to show how perfect she was. Hopkins and Pitt play well, save the film somewhat, but we have to look elsewhere for their truly memorable roles.

The camera work was excellent, as were the beautifully shot images of Montana and its wild nature. A touch of morality about racism here and there. All things considered, a weak typical Hollywood production that I'd rather walk away from.
