Wow, what a story, what a movie and what a chillingly good actors Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon.

The coldness and matter-of-factness of the execution procedure is well portrayed, at least I think it will be.

Also wonderful music.

A strong film by Tim Robbins who is not ready for his test with this prison film, although the approach is of a completely different nature than The Shawshank redemption of course. The death penalty as a theme is central here and that is in any case a socially sensitive theme. Yet Robbins does not want to take sides and tries to present the film as objectively and neutrally as possible. It is nice to note that he highlights both versions, both sides. Yet his view leans toward the abolition of the death penalty, and that's an opinion I share and appreciate (but this aside). The emotions of the perpetrator and the victims are both explained. And sometimes this is disappointing for the sometimes very naive nun Helen. So much so that her own environment (the children) is difficult to keep track of with her visits to the racist murderer. I found the conversations with the parents of the teenagers very touching.

Penn portrays very well the death row inmate Matthew Poncelet. The character even reminded me a bit of Derek (Edward Norton from American History X) with Poncelet also hating blacks and glorifying Nazis. I thought the short flashbacks of the crime were well processed in the film and give a certain panache and break through the sometimes slightly too religious approach of the film.

Anyway Dead Man Walking (what a terrible text) Here Walks a Dead Man is well worth checking out if you like character roles. Top notch in its genre.

It seems that this is shouted when a death row inmate is led to the place of execution, but that can of course be a fabrication to make things a bit more dramed, if the death penalty isn't dramatic enough already.
