The Good Shepherd plot

"The untold story of the most powerful covert agency in the world."

Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) is a diligent student at Yale University. There he is recruited by the secret society Skull and Bones, a breeding ground for future world leaders. His sharp mind, incorruptible reputation and genuine belief in American morals and values make Edward Wilson a prime candidate for a thriving government career, and he is transferred to the OSS - the forerunner of the secret service CIA - during World War II. As one of the founding fathers of the CIA, working in an organization where you have to be wary, Wilson's idealism is soon tested by a growing sense of unease.

Fourteen years after the beautiful Drama / Crime film "A Bronx Tale (1993)" , actor and director Robert De Niro took up directing again in which he also plays. He made "The Good Shepherd" a necessary and timely film, asking the question "How long it is possible to think clearly when life revolves around secrecy and conspiracy thinking".

A promising student at the prestigious Yate, Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) is approached in 1939 by Sam Murach (Alec Baldwin) to keep an eye on his literature professor, who is suspected of Nazi sympathies. This is the plan for a lifelong career in espionage.

With Damon's character at the center, screenwriter Eric Roth ("Munich (2005)") attempts to outline the CIA's attack history. That provides us with an atmospheric, excellently acted (what do you want with a cast like Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Alec Baldwin, Robert De Niro, William Hurt and Joe Pesci together in one film) drama that falls somewhat short on the personal level.

Very standard.

Didn't even know that De Niro had ever directed anything, but after seeing this film I'm not really surprised that nothing followed after that. It is above all very basic, very typical. Such a Hollywood film with deep pockets, but which you don't remember much of afterwards.

It's not thrilling enough for a thriller. The build-up is slow, characters are rather gray and dull and although it's all about deceit and betrayal, it's either too thick or it just doesn't care. Those are things that the director has to rub against.

It won't be a matter of budget. An expensive cast, long playing time and well-maintained sets and props. But you, being De Niro, can pull that off. If you end up being able to do very little with it, certainly within a genre that isn't overflowing with originality or creativity, then you just give birth to another gray mouse.

It's not really that bad in the end, just anything but fun or memorable.

2.0*
