The Fabulous Baker Boys is a slow film bathed in an intimate, melancholic atmosphere that aptly captures the deeply human reality behind the glitz and glamor of stage work.

With this excellent character study, Steve Kloves delivered a fine directorial debut. Kloves also wrote the screenplay, which, however, was taken care of by experienced veteran Sydney Pollack.

The brothers Beau and Jeff Bridges, who appear together in one film for the first time, are doing great.

Although the audience will especially remember the scene in which Michelle Pfeiffer in a red dress squirms over the grand piano. This was probably also Pfeiffer's sultry role to date, in which she demonstrates her not unkind singing talents, just like in the flopped Grease 2 from '82.

The Fabulous Baker Boys, together with Dangerous Liaisons, ensured her big break. The blond film Venus received an Oscar nomination for these films two years in a row ('89 and '90) and her star rose to the top of Hollywood in the following years, where she still shines to this day.

And hopefully she lives happily ever after.

Drama, with a musical touch, which I noticed 25 years ago as not exactly a top film, but solid and interesting. Something that is still true in 2020.

An extremely bored image of Jack emerges, dutifully finishing his schnabbels with his brother. But nothing is what it used to be, the act is tired and old and especially as far as Jack is concerned, the cake is finished. By the way, a perfect role for Jeff Bridges, whom I saw as that one 'crosshead' long after this film. The declining number of performances and disappointing income forces the men to come up with something new. The auths are outright laughable until Suzie Diamond arrives who turns out to be mostly a 'diamond in the rough'. She shook things up quite a bit after adding it and not only ensures a revival but also ultimately the necessary kick.

Far from being a fast-paced or spectacular film, The Fabulous Baker Boys initially takes a look at the precarious artist existence where you are quickly old news and overtaken by competitors. Don't forget the abominable times and days like Christmas and the turn of the year and the shine has already worn off. In addition, in the case of Jack, you rarely do what you really want. It is a sobering image that after that it has to be mainly about the interaction between the three main characters, and boy is there! Pfeiffer in particular caused a stir as the sex lady with a razor-like mouth, a role for which she rightly received an Oscar nomination. It's also the contrasting image between the three that makes it quite entertaining at first.

All in all, The Fabulous Baker Boys is a decent drama, with great music and excellent acting. The ultimate message is simple; do not dwell on something that is not fulfilled and satisfying, because it overtakes you.
