It's the third or fourth time I've seen this powerful social drama about a miners' marching band in central England in the mid-1990s. The impending closure of the mine —the only source of income— leaves deep marks everywhere. In an environment of doom and gloom, the miners find solace in their marching band led by an almost obsessive conductor (the prematurely deceased Pete Postlethwaite).

A film about despair, love, poverty and solidarity, somewhat lightened here and there with touches of humour. Similar to the tragicomedies of Mike Leigh and Ken Loach. Highly recommended, even for people who don't like wind music, although that does help. Beautiful.

I can heartily recommend Pride (2014) to fans of this film.

Beautiful. Both funny and tragic at the same time, but as a total picture in genre just a full-blooded drama this 'Brassed Off'. And succeeded. Nice, strong characters and a few striking scenes. Director Herman paints a strong picture of people in a mining town who have nothing to live for outside the mine and the band. Or is it. Sometimes a bit predictable, but also beautiful. The scene with that clown who earns some extra and sees the bailiff when he gets home is very sad.. and yet such a scene also makes for a small laugh.

Time image.

The sad and dark time in the twilight of the English mining industry, and the enormous unemployment that already existed in the country at that time, is portrayed very clearly. And then a clever story woven through it, and partly true too - the fanfare is clearly based on the real one that also provides the music. With a few star roles of which Postlethwaite stood out to me the most - without wanting to do the others short, because the level is very high across the board.

And that makes for a decent film, although it might be a bit more touching if you're from the UK. Or if you have a thing for this kind of music maybe.
