“You are not my husband!”

Sommersby does a lot of things very well. Gere and Foster are very strong individually (although I didn't believe in their love for a moment), the production design and cinematography are beautifully done and the bittersweet ending works great too. And James Earl Jones in a movie is always a big plus. The story is a bit weak, and is ultimately nothing more than a nickel novel. That's not a bad thing, but I had expected it all just a bit more realistic and raw. It's all a bit too good, and I prefer to see Foster in thrillers or dramas.

Beautiful story about love and honor in post-war America. Greatly portrayed by Foster and Gere. Don't let the age of this film hold you back; it stood the test of time with flying colours!

Good film about a soldier from the war who returns to his wife after 6 years of absence. A beautiful story set right after the American Civil War. Nicely decorated and the community in which the film takes place is well portrayed. Two great roles from Richard Gere and Jodie Foster, and while there's no real chemistry involved, it adds to the ambiguity of their relationship here.

After a long time in the revision, the initial 4.0 stars seem just too ambitious.
